Lancer Evolution MR
Admit it. You’ve browsed the Victoria’s Secret catalog once or twice. Where and why can—and should—remain a secret (please!), but as a red-blooded American male you can’t deny you’ve spent some time studying the pages of this glossy periodical. I know whenever it happens to accidentally show up in my mailbox, I’m in no rush to “return to sender.” I mean, come on, maybe my wife would enjoy a new silk teddy and garters, so as a good husband I feel it’s my duty to study the catalog closely and pick the right outfit for her. It’s the least I can do!
Jovito La Victoria used to have a dirty little secret of his own, but we decided to blow his cover in a big way by putting his amazing Mitsubishi EVO IX on our cover. You see, for a lot of years, Jovi has been a die-hard Honda man. In fact, we featured his immaculate EP Civic in the Sept. ’08 issue (and he’s also owned EG and EK Civics), but truth be told, Jovi started stockpiling EVO parts before he found his ’06 Mitsubishi Lancer EVOlution MR in February of that year. So if you’re the kind of guy who’d rather pick up an issue of Modified Mag than a lingerie catalog (really?), we’re confident Jovi’s EVO will more than satisfy your predilection for only the finest JDM hard parts and accessories. From its Voltex widebody kit and SSR rims to Tomei bumpsticks and DEFI gauges, just like Heidi Klum or Adriana Lima, this Mitsubishi has all the right bits and pieces to get you dreaming and drooling.
As soon as Jovi decided he needed an EVO, he knew it had to be white. But back in 2006, finding a white EVO in the Los Angeles area wasn’t easy. That’s when destiny intervened, in the form of his buddy’s desperate need to find a washroom while they were cruising in Santa Monica. Without any fast food restaurants or gas stations nearby, Jovi and his homey decided to double their pleasure with a visit to the Mitsubishi dealership, where his friend found sweet relief and Jovi found his white MR in the showroom.
As soon as he got it home, with a little help from his Ar-Kan.net teammates, Jovi began installing the parts he’d been stockpiling. In fact, Jovi installed every single part it now features, the only exception being the paint work on the gorgeous Voltex widebody street kit he sourced from sponsors Drivelinestore.com and Showstoppersusa.com.
This very exclusive J-spec exterior treatment not only includes a Voltex front bumper, carbon-fiber canards, an oil cooler duct, a front splitter, a rear diffuser, side skirts, a rear widebody over fenders, an exhaust shield and a Type GT-V wing, but it also features Garage HRS widebody front fenders, a JDM OE rear bumper cover, Craft Square GT3 mirrors, and a Seibon Type 2 hood. Top it off with a seriously sexy set of 18-inch SSR Type Fs wrapped in Nitto NT05 rubber, behind which are seductively tucked Endless Racing big brakes front and rear, and you’ve got the stuff that JDM wet dreams are made of.
With a little help from sponsor Amplified Motorsport, Jovi brought it just as strong under the hood with an extensive list of dress-up and power-adding modifications. The anodized valve cover and Garage HRS spark plug cover may be just for show, but the Garage HRS titanium strut tower brace and carbon-fiber cooling panel, ARC intake box and rad pipe, full collection of Samco hoses, and Tomei turbo heat shield offer improved function and form. And in the all-go no-show department, Jovi installed a pair of Tomei 260-degree camshafts and cam gears to give his MR some extra jam.
Inside his EVO, Jovi dressed things up just as impressively, including a voluptuous pair of Bride GIAS Kevlar lowmax front seats along with Takata harnesses for a little extra support. And for the real JDM aficionados out there, there’s also a limited-edition Nobuteru Taniguchi Nardi steering wheel connected to the steering column via a Work Bells short hub and GTC adapter. But the real showstopper inside is the light show put on by the five-linked DEFI gauges and the wireless reverse camera monitor (so that Jovi can avoid backing up over any of his daughter’s bikes in the driveway). The Pioneer multimedia LCD head unit can keep his daughter entertained while Jovi listens to the sweet sound of his 4G63T breathing out through a 5Zigen Pro-Racer GN+ exhaust.
Since Jovi has built his EVO for both show and track days, the one area he’s planning an upgrade is the suspension. With a 6-point Cusco rollcage on board as well as a whole host of tie-bars and braces from Cusco, Garage HRS, GTSPEC and DG Industries, Jovi is planning to upgrade his street-oriented Tein Flex coilovers and Swift springs to a more hard-core coilover setup with higher spring rates for less body roll when making a canyon run or turning a hot lap around Buttonwillow.
Undoubtedly one of the freshest-looking EVO IXs in the country, Jovi La Victoria’s ’06 Mitsubishi Evolution MR is no longer one of the best-kept secrets on the West Coast. And just like the latest edition of the Victoria’s Secret catalog, the longer you spend poring over every detail of this gorgeous EVO, the more irresistible you’ll find its perfect combination of high-quality J-spec equipment.
