New Mercedes CLS spied almost undisguised

Check out those curves! Mercedes' second-generation CLS has been caught in the flesh and it's clear that the styling borrows heavily from the stunning F800 Style concept shown at March's Geneva Motor Show.

Despite being toned down considerably from the concept, the new model maintains a similar side profile to the outgoing CLS whilst adopting the concept's heavily sculpted flanks and kick over the rear wheel arch.

The concept's aggressive front end is toned down to meet production constraints, but still features a prominent grille and badge. and is flanked by simple light clusters providing a more attractive replacement for the outgoing hockey stick design.

The concept's leaf-shaped LED taillights are carried over onto the production model but the innovative sliding rear doors are ditched in favour of a more conventional set-up.

The CLS has dominated the four-door coupe niche since its arrival in 2004. But with competition from the likes of the Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera, and forthcoming Audi A7, the latest car needs to be better than ever.

So the CLS gets Mercedes' new V6 and V8 engines which feature stop start and the latest direct injection technology. The new 301bhp 3.5-litre petrol V6 is 24% more economical than the engine it replaces, yet offers 33bhp more, while the ageing 5.5-litre V8 is replaced by a new 4.7-litre unit which produces 429bhp - an increase of 47bhp - and is 20% more fuel efficient than the old engine.

A CLS AMG will also be offered, powered by the firm’s new 563bhp 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8. The CLS is set to make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show, ahead of a UK launch in early 2011.
