Tesla and Toyota building electric RAV4, coming to U.S. in 2012

It was reported earlier this week that Tesla Motors is building an electric prototype of the Toyota RAV4 and the Lexus RX to deliver to the Japanese automaker for testing. This morning, the two automakers confirmed at least one of those offerings will be coming to the United States in 2012.

Tesla and Toyota both announced that the two companies have signed an agreement to initiate the development of an electric version of the RAV4 as announced in May of this year by Elon Musk and Akio Toyoda. Prototypes of the model will be made combining the Toyota RAV4 model with a Tesla electric powertrain.

“Tesla plans to produce and deliver a fleet of prototypes to Toyota for evaluation within this year,” Tesla said in a statement. :The first prototype has already been built and is now undergoing testing.”
