Toyota is celebrating selling its 200,000th Prius in Europe. The hybrid was hit the European market in 2000, with sales reaching 100,000 in 2008.

However, with the advent of the latest version of the car, and a shift in buying trends towards cars which are perceived as greener, the Japanese firm has sold a further 100,000 units in the last two years.

Over the hybrid’s 10 years on sale, numerous improvements to its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain have seen fuel consumption fall by more than 23 per cent and CO2 emissions tumble by almost 26 per cent. This has been achieved despite power increasing by 30 per cent.

More than one in five of European sales are in the UK. This year’s sales to date are 6,579 units, almost equaling the 2009 figure in just six months. Confirming the Prius’ presence as a mainstream model the world over, Toyota expects global sales to reach two million by the autumn of this year.
