Volt's eight-year battery warranty


Peace of mind is set to come as standard in the Chevrolet Volt. American buyers of the extended range electric vehicle can expect an eight year, 100,000 mile warranty on the car's advanced, lithium-ion battery when the car goes on sale there 2012.

Parent company GM made the announcement at the Brownstown Township battery plant in Michigan where the power packs for the Volt will be made.

The warranty covers all 161 battery components including the thermal management system, charging system and electric drive components, and is the longest announced for any electric vehicle. It is also transferable free of charge to any future owners of the car.

The battery has an output of 110 kilowatts, weighs 181kg, and gives a range of 310 miles with the first 37 miles propelled by the electric motor and the remainder assisted by a small petrol-powered engine that charges the battery when the car is in motion.
